Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick
Reading this collection of over 20 never before published works is like reading poetry. What I love most about Hurston's writing is being firmly transported to another time and place entirely. You must take your time with the words to fully grasp and delight in them. Many of Hurston's earlier works are based in Eatonville, Florida, which is a treat. My favorite story of all is "Drenched In Light," within which is held one of the most precious and precocious characters (little Iris) I have ever read! Give yourself the gift of these early and incredible works of, as her grave states, "A Genius of the South."
