Manhattan Beach

From the author of the Pulitzer-Prize winning A Visit from the Goon Squad begins a new story set in New York during the Great Depression. We begin by meeting Anna Kerrigan, a twelve-year-old girl who loves to accompany her father, Eddie, on his errands. Unbeknownst to Anna, Eddie falls into work as a gangster as a way to support his wife and daughters, one of whom is severely disabled. Fast forward many years and the country is at war and Anna is working as the first female civilian diver at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Her father disappeared years ago without a word, but while out with a friend of hers one night, Anna meets her father's old boss at one of the many nightclubs he owns. A spark (albeit a clandestine one) is lit between the two and life takes a sharp turn in more than one unexpected direction.
