Run for the Hills

A weird, wonderful road trip that proves family is what we make it—and sometimes, it shows up in a PT Cruiser.

I couldn't love Kevin Wilson's writing more if I tried. Every time he releases a new book, I drop everything. Run for the Hills is no exception—a funny, tender, utterly original road trip novel about the messes we inherit and the families we choose.

Madeline (Mad) Hill runs the stand at her family farm like any other weekend, when a PT Cruiser pulls up, and out steps Reuben (Rube) Hill—her half-brother. News to her. Turns out their father has a habit of starting new lives, and there are at least two more half-siblings out there. Rube wants to find them. And then? Find their dad and ask him, face to face, what the hell he was thinking.

What unfolds is a sharp, sweet, sometimes chaotic journey across America, filled with characters so strange and lovable they feel like they've always existed. Wilson's genius is in his empathy—his ability to find light in dysfunction and joy in the absurd.

This book is bizarre in the best way, with a kind of Wes Anderson vibe. It's about reckoning with the past and choosing what kind of future to build out of it. And like all of Wilson's work, it leaves you with more hope than expected.
