This is that rare and beautiful species of a book that is one part beach reading and the other such brilliant mastery of the human heart, the mother's experience, and one week over the years in the family’s summer vacation in their beloved rental in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Rocky (né Rachel) is sandwiched between her grown children who have left the nest and are experiencing the highs and lows of young adulthood, and her aging parents, while clinging, distancing, loving, and raging at her husband and the world while going through menopause. This book is at once so achingly tender and drop-dead funny; you will never want it to end, just like the summertime. I’m tempted to flip back to page one and start again right now! I loved it that much. If you read one book this summer, this is it!
