Colored Television
This book is incredibly funny, and it's no wonder everyone is talking about it this fall. Meet Jane, our protagonist, who lives in LA and has been working on a novel for ten (!) years. Her husband, Lenny, is a painter who doesn't make money from his work but brings a lot to the table regardless. Their social collateral is high, but their need for money is higher. When a fellow mulatto from her first writing group offers his house for nine months while he shoots a TV show in Australia, Jane, Lenny, and their two children move in. In Brett's hip home office, Jane feels sure she will be able to finish the novel, "her mulatto War and Peace," and that she does. She sends it to her editor, and when it fails epically, she desperately turns to the world of TV to bring her back to the surface when something truly despicable happens.
The author does such a funny job poking fun at Hollywood, the publishing world, real estate in LA, and Labradoodles, among many other things. This novel is sexy and snappy! If you happen to find yourself in a reading rut, this will be the book that yanks you from the hole.
