Jack
The lives of two people intersect, both are children of preachers, one a black woman, the other a white man. Jack Boughton is Gilead's son, Iowa's Minister Boughton, the preacher and narrator of Robinson's Gilead. The latest book in one of the great works of contemporary American fiction reveals much about Jack and the woman with whom he meets and falls in love. Della Miles is a teacher who is the daughter of a highly esteemed black family in Memphis. This is a story of star crossed love, set in segregated St. Louis after World War II, when interracial activity was unacceptable – it’s profoundly moving and reflective. Robinson's books are emotionally and spiritually complex, leaving no mystery as to why she is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal.
