The Lying Life of Adults
Dear fellow Ferrante lovers, the one, the only, Elena Ferrante has come out with yet another invaluable novel. I can feel the coming-of-age angst coursing through my veins almost 25 years later when I read this book. A time travel machine back to what it was like to be 12 years old and seeing the world with the rose-colored glasses ripped off, trying to make sense of it all. Set in Naples, Giovanna is an only child who wants to please everyone one second only to tear it all down the next. She is witness to some clues that all might not be as it seems with her parents, suddenly interested in her estranged aunt and the rest of her father's family from the inelegant neighborhood of his youth, from which she has always been sheltered. She can't make heads or tails of anything, and you will be on the edge of your seat as you uncover the stones.
