You will be surprised and delighted by Garden & Gun’s first cookbook. It’s a cookbook alright, but one that reads like a novel, with wonderful essays and introductions by Julia Reed, Rick Bragg, and the Lee Brothers, to name a few. There are new classics, along with some exciting surprises. Chef John Currence explains how to cook a whole hog (with diagrams!). There are three recipes each for pimento cheese, fried chicken, and gravy (True Sawmill, Red-Eye, and Tomato). Being an Alabama girl myself, I enjoyed not only seeing much-beloved recipes from my childhood, but also learning many new southern food phenomena. Southern or not, everyone knows we have the best food. So make someone in your life happy this holiday season!
